Alison Hepburn Mosaics
ammonite, chatres, 2005
Mosaic for me, is a combination of materials with inherent beauty, the playing of light on the surfaces, and the creativity of the artist. This collecting together of thoughts and objects result in a complete work of art which can be meticulously planned or spontaneous; extravagant or restrained. Throughout history mosaics have endured as an art form because of a human fascination with this ordering of materials and ideas into a permanent form.

I studied fine-art painting at St Albans and Exeter Colleges of Art. I then worked as an illustrator for 10 years, working on commissions for books, national magazines, newspapers, and greeting cards. While working as an illustrator, my work developed a highly decorative style, which led to me being a winner in the National Silver Trust Competition in 1993 to design a plate for the 10 Downing Street ceremonial dinner service.

I now create mosaics for private commissions and exhibitions in the UK and Europe and am a member of the British Association for Modern Mosaic. In recent years I have taken part in various exhibitions.

In 2006 I organised the Symbols of Faith exhibition in York Minster which was open 1st-30th September 2006. This included, finding the venue and negotiating with the Minster, currating the applications and hanging the exhibition.

I prepared the sucessful proposal for the group exhibition at Wakefield Art Gallery Yorkshire 2007 including; choosing the artists, sourcing biographies and images from the artists and proparing the formal application document.

I am a member of the Northern Area group of BAMM a group of mosaic artists, group exhibitions, technique demonstrations and bringing together solo artists in the area.

Alison Hepburn - Chimneys, Breakout, Bilton Craft Gallery 2007

These three chimneys were first displayed at the Breakout exhibition at the Bilston Craft Gallery in 2007. This was a juried exhibition of 15 international artists.

They were on display this summer at the Newby Hall Sculpture Park for the Summer's Season 2008.

I would like to thank the Arts Council of Great Britain for their grant which has part funded this project.
